Step 1
The first step to buying a used canoe is shopping locally. Ask relatives or friends if they know of someone with a canoe they would like to sell. Post a canoe wanted sign in your local supermarket. Check the local newspaper for canoe ads, or place an ad yourself, describing the type of canoe you'd like to buy and the price range you expect to pay.
-
Step 2
Once you have located a canoe for sale, go for an inspection before you buy.
-
Step 3
It doesn't matter if the canoe is old or dusty. What you want to look for is the physical soundness and quality of the boat. Note down the brand name of the canoe if you are unfamiliar with it so you can look it up on the internet later. Quality canoe names include Grumman, Old Town, Mad River, and many others.
-
Step 4
Lift the canoe up to see how heavy it is. Measure the canoe or ask the owner for the length. Physically inspect the boat for cracks, holes or leaks. Ask the owner if it leaks, or if there are any problems that can be easily repaired.
-
Step 5
Don't buy a canoe if it looks heavily damaged. Damaged canoes cost more to repair then they are worth.
-
Step 6
If you want to buy a two person canoe, look for a canoe around 17 feet in length. A single person canoe is usually about 15 to 17 feet in length.
-
Step 7
Look at a few canoes before you make your final purchase. Canoes that aren't advertised in the newspaper won't sell right away, so shop around before you make your final purchase.
-
Step 8
If you can't find a canoe locally, look online or in regional newspapers.
