Have you ever been curious to know what your computer's IP (Internet Protocol) address is?

Computers are identified on the world wide web by their IP address. IP addresses are used to route information between computer networks.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer
  • A copy of Microsoft Windows
  1. Step 1

In Windows click on your "Start" button. Using Vista, click on the Windows logo in your taskbar.

  2. Step 2

Click on "Run" and type in the word "command".

In Vista, type in the word "command" in the "Start Search" box at the bottom of your start bar and select "Command Prompt".

  3. Step 3

Click "OK" and a black "Command Prompt" box will appear on your screen.

In Vista this step is not necessary as the "Command Prompt" box will appear after Step 2.

  4. Step 4

In the black "Command Prompt" box, type: ipconfig

    Then press "Enter".

(This step is the same in all versions of Windows)

  5. Step 5

The resulting IP address will be listed in the results from Step 4.

There are certain IP address ranges that are "private" networks and "public" networks.

Some examples of "private" networks are:

    10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
    172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
    192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
