Namibia is a diverse country in Africa, offering many different experiences, from wildlife to site seeing, from adventure to culture.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Doctor's travel advice
  • Soft bags, not to heavy
  • Sunscreen and hats
  • Camera with dust-proof case
  1. Step 1

Preparation: Decide how you want to travel (driving yourself, on tour, or flying around.) Make bookings for your flights, travel in Namibia and all accommodation. If you are self driving, when in Namibia it is a good idea to double check booked accommodation a day or two before you get there. It's a huge country, and you don't want to be without a bed, miles from nowhere

  2. Step 2

Getting there: When you fly to Namibia, you are most likely to land in Windhoek. Plan an overnight in Windhoek. Johannesburg is really bad with lost luggage, and so it is best not to book your bags through, but rather to transfer you bags yourself in Johannesburg if you come through that way. When you get to Windhoek, make sure you are picked up or get your hire car. Change some money - you will not be able to do this in town on the weekend, so it is better to do it at the airport. You will need some cash in the remote areas. Don't flash your cash around to much...this is Africa.

  3. Step 3

Where to visit: The south is full of huge open spaces and usually involve a lot of driving. If you want to visit the Fish River Canyon, it is probably best to fly there. Same goes for the coastal town of Lüderitz.

Sossusvlei is one of the most amazing areas in the world. Spend a couple days and take a good guide.

Swakopmund is a coastal town. It's great for some adventure stuff. The ocean is cold and gives fog many days of the year. Not great for lying on the beach. Great for birding and German coffee shops.

The North west is Namibia's wild west. Desert Elephants, Rhinos, big landscapes and incredible rock art makes this region worth a visit. Use reputable tour companies to visit the more remote areas (such as Palmwag concession.)

Etosha is Namibia's prime game park. Expect lots of people, but an amazing wildlife spectacle. No off road driving in the park. Dry season at the waterholes provide most of the high profile game viewing opportunities. April is best for birds.

The Caprivi is the gateway to traveling on to Zambia. There are opportunities for boat trips on the beautiful rivers of the area. Good for romantic trips, great for bird watching. Bad mosquito, so be prepared.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your time. Namibia is huge, and it is easy to spend to much time on the road. Rather choose a trip that spends more time in some spots.
  • Tips are expected in Namibia
  • Traveling with a hire car, be sure you know how to change a flat tire.
  • Winter can get really cold. Don't be fooled. Take warm stuff in winter.
  • Protect your cameras from dust and sand.
  • Be careful of dehydration, both summer and winter
  • Be careful of the sun.
