This is a good eample of a sign that works.

Create a hand written or custom made sign that goes into detail about how you do not tolerate soliciting. This sign can still look professional by saying the following.

    No Soliciting
    No Peddlers
    No Canvassers
    No Sales People

This type of sign will scare off 90% of door to door people. A plain no soliciting sign you buy at the store is useless. Solicitors will ignore this sign almost all the time. A lead or sale is worth the small chance of having the sign pointed out. With a handwritten sign the chances of getting a lead or sale is much lower but the chance of getting yelled at is very likely.

  2. Step 2

Hang this sign in a location that is visible from both the street and your doorstep if possible. Solicitors will walk through yards and along sidewalks so it's best have a spot that can been easily seen from both.

  3. Step 3

Don't open the door. Acknowledge they they are there and walk away. This is not rude at all. You are doing them a favor by not wasting their time so they can generate more sales or leads from someone who is interested.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't be rude. Solicitors have a lousy job, no need to make it worse.
  • Don't threaten a solicitor. They can call the police on you and have you arrested. The odds of this are slim, but why take the chance.
  • Most areas require solicitors to have a license but few are given one. Check with your local police department for this information.
  • Don't make excuses for not wanting to buy, get an estimate, etc... Solicitors hear excuses all day long and are able to come up with a good reason around each very quickly. It may seem clever but a few quick replies may talk you into whatever they are selling.
