While you can always run out to the store to buy Halloween props, making your own can provide twice the fun, especially if the kids get involved.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape recorder
  • Black, orange, gray and silver spray paint
  • Craft knife
  • Stencils and stencil paint
  • Poster board
  • Foam core board
  • Papier mache
  • Fiberfil (Pillow stuffing)
  1. Step 1

Since the best props include creepy sound effects, you may want to start by carrying your tape recorder around the house and recording the noises from squeaky doors and creaky stairs. The kids will probably be delighted to provide plenty of terrified screams and spooky moans. (You may want to notify the neighbors that you're screaming for Halloween sound effects before you start so you don't get a visit from the police!)

  2. Step 2

Foam core board is a very versatile material. It works especially well for tombstones. Use a craft knife to cut out the basic tombstone shapes, spray paint them and then stencil or carve names and dates on them. Don't forget the traditional R.I.P. across the top of a few of the stones.

  3. Step 3

For a quick and easy prop, draw witchy and ghostly silhouettes on poster board. Cut them out and then place them in second floor windows or hang them from trees. They will give the place a very creepy ambience with little effort.

  4. Step 4

Make 3-D creepy critters, such as spiders, using papier mache. This lightweight, easy to use material is also great for making artificial jack-o-lanterns or the headless horseman's head. Allow the pieces to thoroughly dry and then spray paint them for a more realistic effect.

  5. Step 5

Pull the fiberfil apart to create spooky looking spider webs. Drape them over bushes and across window frames for a haunted house look

Tips & Warnings
  • Using a balloon or box for the base of a round or squarish papier mache prop helps you make the piece without spending as much time on building up the shape.
  • Make sure you leave a clear path between props so noone trips and falls on the way to the front door.
