So you want a pet turtle.. or was that a pet tortoise. I will help you choose which one is best for you!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 55 gallon tank
  • Bed a Beast
  • Floating platform
  • filter for 75 gallon tank
  • water bowl
  1. Step 1

First decide if you want an animal that lives mainly in water or mainly on land. Turtles need water to swim but also some where to get out of the water so they can bask in the uva.uvb light.
Tortoises need somewhere to hide from the light.

  2. Step 2

Water turtle *A little high maintenance*
Take your 55 gallon tank and fill 60% with water.
Place filter on tank. Let filter run for 24 hours before you place turtle(s) in the tank. Then place in any rocks or gravel you want on the bottom. Place a floating log or platform with suction in the tank. You will also need a heater. I recommend a heater that can be placed inside the tank(not the sticker ones as these tend to not be accurate) Keep the tank about 75. You may want to add some fish to the tank(beware some turtles will eat the fish some will not). and your good to go! Place turtle(s) inside of the tank and enjoy! Feed them a variety of turtle pellets and diet depending on what type of water turtle you have!

  3. Step 3

Remember to change the water every week and wash everything off. You can place your turtle in the tub while you clean his home.

  4. Step 4

Land tortoise * Little high maintenance*
Get a tortoise table or you can make one. Tortoises do not like tanks as this may stress them out.
Place a mixture of bed a beast and play sand in the tortoise table.
place a water bowl half full so the tortoise does not drown.(tortoises can not swim) Place a clamp lamp on either side of the table One with UVA, and one with UVB. Feed plenty of Romaine lettuce, flowers like dandelions, they like green leafy veggies, carrots sliced thin. Strawberries every once in a while won't hurt either. It's like there chocolate. If it's a nice day outside bring him out side with you just watch him so that dogs or birds can not get to him! Last just enjoy your new pet, He will out live you so make sure this is the pet for you. 100 plus years!

Tips & Warnings
  • Change the water either 80% or %100 of it every week to avoid smell.
  • Wash hands after handling any turtle as they can spread salmonella.
  • Feed twice a day, 12 hours of light 12 hours of night basking.
