The smell of gasoline can be both annoying and cause some nausea. There are a few easy methods to remove the smell.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Absorbent pads/Kitty Litter
  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar and water
  • Coffee grounds
  • Vacuum
  1. Step 1

The first step it to make sure you have the area well ventilated. If indoors, open windows and use fans. If in a car, keep the doors open.

  2. Step 2

Absorb any remaining liquid. If absorbent pads are available, use them. Kitty litter works great too. We use that a lot on car accident scenes.

  3. Step 3

Once all the gas is absorbed. Start with a water/vinegar mixture. Vinegar is known to neutralize almost any smell. It should be a 50/50 mix.

  4. Step 4

When the vinegar dries, place baking soda on the affected area and leave sit overnight. The next day, vacuum up the baking soda.

  5. Step 5

If this does not neutralize the smell, rub some coffee grounds into the area and leave them sit a day or so before vacuuming them up.

  6. Step 6

If all else fails, you may need to replace the carpet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Depending on the size of the spill, these steps may need to be repeated a time or two.
  • REMEMBER to have the area well ventilated. You can't clean it up if you're passed out!
  • Make sure to use non-sparking tools and be aware of static electricity in the air. Gasoline is easily ignited.
