How to Choose the Right Makeup Colors for your Complexion

According to the book, Color Me Beautiful, women fall into four basic categories based on their complexions. The four seasons, Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn, categorizes women based on their skin, hair and eye color in order to choose the right colors that blends with and complements their complexion, making them look whole, complete and well put together.

  1. Step 1

    Look at you face in a mirror and decide if your skin has cool or warm undertones.
    The four seasons in makeup are divided into two categories, Cool Colors and Warm Colors. Winter and Summer are the Cool Colors because they have blue undertones, and Autumn and Spring are the Warm Colors because they have yellow undertones. But the Winter Cool-toned colors are darker toned than the Summer Cool-toned colors, and the Autumn Warm-toned colors are darker toned than the Spring Warm-toned colors.
    Winter people tend to have skin color ranging from very white to black. Also, other possible skin tones are beige, gray beige, rosy beige and olive. Their hair color ranges from black, dark brown with red undertones, medium ash brown, gray hair, white blonde, and white. Their eye color ranges from dark brown, hazel, gray blue, blue with white flecks, dark blue and violet, gray green, and green with white flecks.
    Summer people tend to have skin tones of pale beige, rosy beige, very pink, gray brown and rosy brown. Their hair color ranges from white to dark brown, which include platinum blonde, ash blonde, mousy blonde, mousy brown, taupe dark brown, brown with red undertones, blue gray, and pearl white. Their eye colors include blue, green, soft gray green, soft gray blue, bright blue, pale clear aqua, hazel, pale gray, soft rosy brown and gray brown.
    Autumn people tend to have skin tones of ivory, peach, golden beige, dark copper beige and golden brown as well as some might have freckles. Their hair colors include red, copper red brown, auburn, golden dark honey brown, golden honey blonde, ash dirty blonde, strawberry blonde, charcoal brown or black, golden gray and oyster white. Their eye colors include dark brown, golden brown, amber, hazel, green, pale green, olive green, blue with aqua or turquoise, teal blue and steel blue.
    Spring people tend to have skin tones of ivory, peach, golden beige, rosy cheeks and golden brown. Their hair color ranges from flaxen, yellow, honey or strawberry blonde to strawberry redhead and auburn, as well as golden brown, red black, dove gray and creamy white. Their eye colors include blue, steel blue, green, aqua, teal and golden brown.

    After you compare each group's description to your own face, hair and eye coloring in front of your mirror, pick the group that most describe you from one of the four seasons.
    If you are a Winter, you should go for the following colors: shocking pink, deep hot pink, magenta, fuchsia, royal purple, bright burgundy, blue-red, red, royal blue, hot turquoise, chinese blue, lemon yellow, light green, green, emerald green, pine green, icy green, icy yellow, icy aqua, icy violet, icy pink, icy blue, white, light gray, medium gray, charcoal gray, black, taupe gray beige, navy blue, blue.   3. Step 3

    When applying eye makeup, apply the highlighter color on the underbrow area, a darker shade or color on the orbital bone and outer third of the lid, and the darkest shade or color on the lids. Then, put on some mascara, foundation, blush and lipstick.
    Make sure to outline lips in a similar color to the lipstick but not darker.
