How to Treat Loss of Eyelashes

If your eyelashes are falling out, see a doctor.

There are a number of conditions that could cause the loss of one's eyelashes. Trichotillomania is a psychological condition in which a person pulls or rubs out their hair, including their eyelashes. Alopecia Areata is a medical condition that causes hair loss. Blepharitis is a chronic eye condition that causes irritation, watering and burning of the eyes. Sufferers of Blepharitis rub their eyes frequently, which can cause eyelash loss. Contact Allergic Dermatitis, an allergic reaction to something topically applied, can also be a cause for eyelash loss.

Instructions

    • 1

Seek psychiatric help if your eyelash loss is due to trichotillimania. A psychiatrist can prescribe medication to help lessen the urge to pull out your eyelashes.

    • 2

Call a dermatologist if you are unsure of why your eyelashes are falling out. Systemic steroids may be prescribed if the eyelash loss is due to Alopecia Areata.

    • 3

Get an allergy test at a dermatologists office to see if you have contact allergic dermatitis. If you are allergic to an ingredient in a product that you have been using around your eyes, cease using that product.

    • 4

Ask your dermatologist about a prescription lash growing treatment like Latisse, to help speed regrowth of your eyelashes or to help thicken the ones you have left.

    • 5

Suffering a physical trauma to the eye can cause eyelash loss. After the injury has healed, a treatment like FNS Nutrilash Lash and Brow Enhancer can help condition the lashes you still have and those that are growing back.
