Things You'll Need:
- An advanced degree in your specialized field or many years' experience in that field
- A syllabus
- A textbook
-
Step 1
Earn an advanced degree (some colleges only require a master's degree to be able to teach an undergraduate course, but others may require a Ph.D.).
-
Step 2
Contact the chair of the department in which you're interested in teaching and see if adjuncts will be hired for the semester.
-
Step 3
Choose the textbook(s) you will require for the course and buy a cheap copy of it(them) several weeks in advance.
-
Step 4
Plan your syllabus around the academic calendar, leaving room for guest speakers and field trips, if appropriate. You will also need to incorporate about three tests, including the final exam. Plan your assignments in advance.
-
Step 5
Be prepared for students who are not as interested in the subject as you are.
-
Step 6
Be kind and flexible, but not to the point of losing their respect.
