Step 1
Rinse the area with club soda as soon as possible to lift the stain. Pour and blot, pour and blot.
-
Step 2
Once the liquid aspect of the gasoline is taken care of, it is time to move on to the odor and stain. Use a chemical-free liquid laundry detergent to scrub the stain. Regular carpet cleaning solvents may react with the gasoline, and the fumes could prove dangerous. In a case like this, the more natural, the better. There are also lots of vegetable-based enzymes that work very well on cleaning carpets.
-
Step 3
Once you've scrubbed the stain, making sure the detergent has penetrated the carpet padding (where most odors are locked), let it dry. Once dry, sprinkle baking soda onto the stain, let set about 15 minutes, and vacuum it up.
-
Step 4
If your carpet still smells like gasoline, you may have to pull the carpet up and replace the pad. That is where the worst carpet odors accumulate, and until the pad is replaced, there isn't a lot you can do to remove the stain at the carpet level.
