Spreading out and Transplanting Iris

    When your Iris have naturally divided and muliplied, you need to separate them. Prepare a new garden bed for them to be transplanted to. Fall is a a perfect time for transplanting.

    Dig under the clump of Iris with your round pointed shovel to remove it from its setting. Remove excess dirt. Pull roots and stalks apart one by one. Cut stalk to 4" to 6".

    After you have a dozen or so individual Iris plants, you are ready for transplanting. With hand trowel, dig a 3" to 4" holes in the new area. Place one Iris in each hole, cover with dirt, and pat down firmly. Keep new plantings at least 6" to 8" apart.

Tips & Warnings
  • Transplanted Iris are very hardy and most transplants will "catch".
  • Soak with water daily for the first week.
  • Add your favorite flower fertilzer
  • You must tamp down soil firmly to avoid air pockets around the roots.
