Things You'll Need:
- Sockets
- Rachet
- New spark plugs
- spark plug gap tool
-
Step 1
Get all the items ready. Most auto parts stores will have a book or mini computer that will tell you what spark plugs your car needs. Have a ratchet, sockets, and a medium sized (4-6 inches) extension. When you buy the spark plugs, also get a spark plug gapper. This is a small round disc with a lip that goes around it.
-
Step 2
To find out what your spark plug gap should be, look under your hood. There will be a large white sticker with the vehicle info on it. It will Tell you the year, the engine, etc. Near the bottom it will say "spark plug gap" or something very close. it will be a decimal number, like .53. That means 52 thousandths of an inch.
-
Step 3
To gap the new plugs, put the end with the metal bar on the gapper on the small side. Then gently slide it around the gapper until the bar lines up with the correct gap.
-
Step 4
Next, remove the spark plug wire. It is best to do one spark plug and one wire at a time. Pull on the rubber boot around the wire (not the wire itself!) and it will pop off the spark plug. Now use your ratchet and socket to take out the spark plug. Remember, left loosens, right tightens.
-
Step 5
Then put a properly gapped spark plug in the engine and carefully tighten it. Don't over tighten, just get it tight.
-
Step 6
Snap the wire back onto the plug.
-
Step 7
Repeat for the rest of the spark plugs.
-
Step 8
Now start the vehicle. If it sounds weird or makes any strange noises (knocking, pinging, etc) shut it off and recheck the plug wires and make sure they are all connected!
