Instructions

    • 1

Find out exactly what type of recommendation is required. Often times, a personal recommendation is not enough...many schools or employers want a reference from your academic or professional life. Then start thinking about who you know that would fit this type. Consider a past professor whose class you excelled in, or a business acquaintance that you had positive dealings with.

    • 2

Choose who you would like to ask to provide your letter of recommendation. Be sure it is someone who knows you rather well and can honestly attest to your professionalism and academic ability. Even if it is a past professor that may not remember you very well, your grades should speak for themselves in helping him or her make a recommendation (they are used to getting these types of requests).

    • 3

Request your letter. Contact your choice, reminding him or her about how they know you (if necessary). Reiterate positive attributes they may know about you, and be specific about what you are looking for. If your letter is being used for academic purposes, have him or her highlight your past scholastic successes or describe special project skills or characteristics you possess.
