This article is about what kind of anti-virus software you should put on your computer.

Things You'll Need:

  • Just a computer and an internet connection.
  1. Step 1

Updates: Make sure you get updates to your computer whenever they're available. This is very important. Make sure any anti-virus program you have on your computer gets updated daily! Do it manually if necessary!

Active: Make sure your anti-virus program is still working. I've had my computer shut down by viruses when my anti-virus program had expired. I didn't know the program I had on my computer had only a year to work. Just to be sure, go to your Start Menu and click it. Another screen should appear. When another screen appears click the Control Panel. Under Security Essentials, you should see Firewall, Automatic Updates and Firewall all of these should be ON.

  3. Step 3
One of the best anti-virus systems out there.

Not On: If your firewall isn't on you can either call tech support or if that's not feasible go to Cnet.com. You can get free firewall software from there if necessary. But you might want to consider going to Radio Shack and ask about buying a router or something else outside the computer to be the firewall. The reason for that is it's possible for someone to hack into your computer and shut off your firewall if your firewall is only software so it's best to have a firewall that's based on a router or modem.

If the Automatic Updates is off click Automatic Updates near the bottom of the page. When you've done that a window should appear. In that window you can click a small circle right next to the words, Automatic Recommended. If that doesn't solve the problem you might have to go the Microsoft Windows Update website. As soon as you get there it will check your computer for the needed updates. If that still doesn't work you might want to call a repairman.

If the Virus Protection is off you'll either need to go to Cnet.com and get virus protection there(I'd suggest AVG if you don't want to have to pay for it) However Symantec is pretty good and Nod 32 is also very good too. You can also go to Best Buy and get Norton Ghost. Ask a sales rep for the latest version. You need to get virus protection as soon as possible!

Tips & Warnings
  • You might want to consider getting superantispyware at Cnet.com. Downloading this and using to scan your computer will help to get rid of small viruses that the main anti-virus program might not catch.
  • Make sure you have anti-virus software on your computer!
