What do you do with all those unripened, green tomatoes still in the garden when the weatherman reports an imminent frost? This is the way my grandparents saved them from the frost and had tomatoes ripening almost til Christmas.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • newspaper
  • large box
  • green tomatoes
  • cool storage space
  1. Step 1

    Pick green tomatoes from garden.

  2. Step 2

Wipe tomatoes with a clean, dry cloth to remove dirt.

  3. Step 3

Wrap each tomato in a half sheet of newspaper and place into box. Don't pack them tightly, but do make sure the paper stays around each tomato in the box.

  4. Step 4

Place the box in a cool spot in the basement.

  5. Step 5

Occasionally check to see if any tomatoes are ripe, and if so, remove ripe ones from the box. You don't want them to begin to go bad in the box. You should have fresh tomatoes through late fall. If you like them, you can also have fried green tomatoes anytime.

on 9/22/2008 I have a bush of vine tomatoes growing in the back yard and more and more green tomatoes are forming. I was thinking that the plant would have died by now, but it didn't so thanks for this!
