Step 1
In today's economy, with rapidly rising prices on everything, it is crucial for most of us to save as much money as we can. Here are some hints that may help you do that.
-
Step 2
Saving Money on Gas
Buy a car that gets at least 30 miles to the gallon. Get a credit card that offers discounts on gas or cash back when you purchase gas. Consider a hybrid car instead of one that uses gas. Buy gas at the cheapest price you can find near you. Some grocery stores offer less expensive gas at their own gas stations as do stores such as Costco and Sam's Club. When you drive, try to stay at 35 to 40 miles per hour. Stop slowly. Don't jump on the gas when lights turn green. Don't gun your engine. Try to reduce the number of times you stop and start. Keep your engine serviced and tuned. Keep your tires properly inflated. Combine errands into one trip, instead of several. Walk the kids to school. Ride a bike or the bus to work. -
Step 3
Saving Money on Home Items, Office Supplies, etc.
Check out eBay and Amazon for great deals on just about everything!
Shop yard sales, consignment shops, $1.00 stores, thrift stores, and other budget retailers. Target and Walmart have great buys. In my area, Walmart sells Velveeta Cheese for $4.50 compared to $7.50 at the grocery store! Buy store brands.
Use your local library instead of buying books.
Use coupons. -
Step 4
Save Money on Medications
Shop at Walmart or other retailers for good prices on prescription medications. They also have hundreds of generic medications available for $4.00 per month, $10-$12 for a 3 month supply.
Get your medications on the internet.
Ask your doctor to prescribe a generic medication over a name brand.
Shop at pharmacies that offer incentives for using their pharmacies.
When you file your tax return, itemize your deductions and you may be able to deduct your medical and prescription medication costs each year. -
Step 5
Saving Money on Kids' Stuff
Get together with friends and relatives to swap children's clothing, sports equipment, and toys.
Before school starts in the fall, Target, K-Mart, Walmart, and Walgreen's have great buys on school supplies.
Don't give in to your child's pleading for costly sport shoes and other over-priced items. -
Step 6
Saving Money on Homecare
Do your own yard work. Do your own housework. Wash your own windows. -
Step 7
Saving on Water
Limit showers to 5 minutes. Don't let the water run while you brush your teeth.
Water your yard in the evening or at night. Plant drought tolerant plants. Don't water if it just rained.
Stop faucets from dripping.
Cover your pool to reduce water evaporation.
