You're never too old for a birthday party.
You're never too old for a birthday party.

Adult birthday parties are a great way of gathering friends and celebrating. Every year on your birthday you get a chance to start new. Celebrate this occasion and remember - you're not getting older, you're just you. Being a grown-up doesn't mean you have to sacrifice great birthday parties. From 1 to 100, every birthday should be as memorable as possible.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Party theme
  • Party decorations
  • Food and beverages
  1. Step 1

    Adult Birthday Party Themes

Design the adult birthday party around activities or a theme that your Guest of Honor enjoys.

For a gardener suggest guests bring items for the garden such as seed packets or fertilizer spikes.
-Ask guests to dress in gardening clothes with big straw hats with mosquito masks.
-Put a real flower on the top of the cake.

Recreate the best times of the Guest of Honor's youth.
-Create a pictorial timeline of the Guest of Honor's life as part of your decor.
-Invite friends from the Guest of Honor's past and organize a small "this is your life" presentation.

Choose a historic theme for a lot of laughs.
-Use the decade when the Guest of Honor was born, was a teenager, etc..
-Plan the party around the decade the Guest of Honor is now entering.
-Ask guests to come dressed how they feel the Guest of Honor will look in ten years.
-Create the mood with the music, clothes and even popular children's games from the period.

  2. Step 2

    Adult Birthday Party Decorating Ideas

Decorate according to your theme and do not stop with a few balloons. There are many choices from elaborate to funny, and everything in between. Let your imagination take over on this one.

-Create a collage of pictures that traces the birthday person's history.
-Use a big piece of paper and markers to draw a diagram (kind of like a friend tree) of how the Guest of Honor knows everyone and how everyone is interconnected.
-Hang a theme appropriate backdrop and photograph each guest with the birthday person against it. Use a Polaroid for instant results or create an online album that everyone can share.

  3. Step 3

    Adult Birthday Party Cuisine

There should always be food at an adult birthday party. Eating guests are happy guests.

-Buffet - A wonderful way to expand around your theme and is often less expensive than a formal sit-down affair.
-Sit down dinner - For less than 8 guests. There can still be a theme, more subdued.
-Finger food - Appetizers are great because of the variety, they can be made ahead of time and your guests are free to mingle.
-Pot luck - Make a main course and ask guests to bring complimentary foods that fit the theme.

  4. Step 4

    Adult Birthday Party Cake Alternatives

The desserts you serve can be complimented by a variety of beverages at your adult birthday party.

Dessert wines ("stickies,") are just as varied as the dessert you will serve at your adult birthday party. The wine should always be sweeter than the dessert.*

-Cream and cheese desserts serve Sauternes or a Barsac
-A dark, bitter chocolate dessert try Pinot Noir or a rich Cabernet Sauvignon.
-Dark chocolate desserts offer a Port wine.
-A chocolate dessert with a fruit filling a rich Orange Muscat is appropriate.
-Chocolate and berry combinations should be served with Dark berry wines.
-Custard style desserts need a light touch with fruit wines made out of peaches or strawberries.
-Tropical fruit dessert calls for exotic fruit wines, such as kiwi or pineapple.
-Sparkling wines and champagnes are a standard for desserts. These wines will vary in sweetness, but often add a touch of class to most desserts.
-Serve very sweet desserts with coffee and tea.
