Make Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

Did you make roasted pumpkin seeds this fall season? Do you remember your mom or grandmother roasting pumpkin seeds for a treat when you were a child? I loved to eat roasted pumpkin seeds as a child. I didn’t realize how easily they could be made at home until I was married and had children myself. Whether you are scooping seeds out of a large pumpkin or a small one, set the seeds aside and make roasted pumpkin seeds for a special treat throughout the fall season.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pumpkin(s)
  • Serrated knife
  • Paper towels
  • Large bowl
  • Cutting board
  • Cookie sheet (one with sides is helpful)
  • Butter, vegetable oil, or margarine (your choice)
  • Sea salt
  • Pepper
  • Favorite herbs
  • Oven
  1. Step 1

Carve your pumpkin, saving the seeds.

  2. Step 2

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

  3. Step 3

Clean your seeds. Place them in a large bowl with fresh water. Using your hands, rub the seeds between your hands to remove the flesh of the pumpkin. Once the seeds are clean, place them on a paper towel to dry.

  4. Step 4

A cookie sheet with sides works the best for roasting pumpkin seeds. This way, the seeds won’t slip off of the cookie sheet and burn on the bottom of the oven. Spread the clean pumpkin seeds over the cookie sheet evenly.

  5. Step 5

Using melted butter, vegetable oil, or melted margarine, give the seeds a light coating (about 4 Tablespoons over the entire amount on the cookie sheet). Your seasonings will “stick” this way.

  6. Step 6

The seasonings you use are really a personal preference. Our favorite seasoning for roasted pumpkin seeds is sea salt. Sprinkle lightly with sea salt and bake. Mrs. Dash, garlic salt, cinnamon, or lemon pepper are also popular choices of seasonings.

  7. Step 7

Bake at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 to 40 minutes, (every oven is different), or until the pumpkin seeds are golden brown.

  8. Step 8

Remove the seeds from the oven and sprinkle with more sea salt if desired.

  9. Step 9

Enjoy your warm roasted pumpkin seeds!

Tips & Warnings
  • Store roasted pumpkin seeds in a sealed container in a dry, cool place.
  • Roasted pumpkin seeds are not only delicious; they are an excellent source of protein, zinc, B vitamins, Vitamin E, fiber, and iron.
