How to Tips on Replacing Spark Plugs on a 2000 Grand Marquis

The most difficult part of changing the spark plugs on a 2000 Grand Marquis is finding them! Instead of the traditional spark plug wires that go from each spark plug to the ignition coil, this car has the Coil On Plug (COP) system, a type of distributorless ignition system where individual ignition coils are mounted directly over each spark plug. No spark plug wires are used. (Explains why you couldn't find them!)

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 8 Bosch-Platinum+4 / Spark Plug Part Number: 4459 $5.99 each
  • 7mm or 9/32" socket
  • 5/8" socket to loosen the plugs OR spark plug wrench
  1. Step 1

Using a 7mm or 9/32 socket, remove the bolt that secures the COP (coil-on-plug) to the intake manifold. Remove the COP - the spark plug is under it. There are 8 COPS to remove, one for each spark plug.

  2. Step 2

Using the 5/8 socket OR spark plug wrench, loosen the spark plug. Once it is loosened, remove with fingers.

  3. Step 3

Thread new spark plug into place being careful not to crossthread or overtighten.

  4. Step 4

Replace COP over spark plug and replace bolt to secure COP to intake manifold, using 7mm or 9/32 socket. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for each spark plug.

Tips & Warnings
  • Platinum tipped spark plugs have factory set gaps - do not try to gap them yourself. Spark plug damage will result.
