Things You'll Need:
- 2 or 3 friends whose design instincts you trust
- a broom and duster
- some refreshments
- sliding disks to put under heavy furniture
- supplies for picture hanging
-
Step 1
Before the Party
Invite several friends whose taste you admire. It takes probably 2 to 4 people to move the furniture easier. Stock in some snacks and beverages. Clean under the chairs and behind the sofa so you won't be embarrassed by enormous dust bunnies when the furniture gets moved. -
Step 2
The Briefing
Explain what doesn't suit you about the room and its furnishings. Tell them what you'd like the room to feel like and what activities it needs to accomodate. -
Step 3
Use the Muscles
Move most of the accessories and smaller furniture out of the room except for the really too-big-to-remove items. -
Step 4
Experiment
Move the major pieces around trying them on different walls, different angles and combinations. Keep in mind traffic patterns, views, and balance. -
Step 5
Treasure Hunt
Tour the house looking for furniture and accessories to use in the room. Try lamps in different places. Hold pictures up on various walls to check the effect. Add pillows and throws. -
Step 6
Savor the Success
Sit down with your exhausted friends and enjoy the new room. Have some refreshments and relax.

on 9/6/2008 This is SUCH a good idea! Even if nothing much changes, you will have had a great time with your friends. They will feel honored that you asked their opinions about something so personal to you. Carol

on 9/5/2008 I so need this, can I share your friends? Really, great ideas, using what we already have in new ways is a good way to save money while using things we already love.
