Make Soy Wax Candles
Make Soy Wax Candles

Candles have always been a part of homes and a part of decorating. Not only do they give light and create atmosphere, but a fragrant candle is hard to beat for adding delightful smells to your home. Soy wax candles are now popular because they're made from hydrogenated soybean oil, are cleaner burning, and burn longer. Making soy wax candles is fun and quite easy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • block or flake form soy wax
  • fragrance oil
  • concentrated liquid dye or chips
  • wicks with attached metal discs
  • Mason jars
  • double boiler
  • thermometer
  1. Step 1

Put the soy wax block or flakes in a double boiler. You need 16 oz. Heat on medium heat until the soy reaches around 175 degrees. Use the thermometer to check the wax periodically.

  2. Step 2

Add the dye. Do this slowly to determine how much you want. Stir for two minutes.

  3. Step 3

Add the fragrance oil. You will need one ounce for 16 oz of wax. Keep the temperature around 175 degrees. Stir again for two minutes.

  4. Step 4

Let the wax cool to about 150 degrees before pouring it into a mason jar. The mason jar should be slightly warmer than room temperature. Put in hot water to warm it. Dry completely. Pour the wax in slowly.

  5. Step 5

Let cool slightly. Now add the wick placing it in the center of the candle. Make sure the wick is straight. Tie the wick to a pencil to keep it straight.

  6. Step 6

Once the wax has cooled, cut the wick to a half an inch. You have just made your first soy wax candle.

on 12/15/2008 Great directions. The best thing about soy wax now is that since the price of oil got so high (not a good thing), and the traditional wax is made from a petroleum base, soy is now less expensive than wax. Thank You ~Donna

on 10/19/2008 Good article. These candles would make charming Christmas presents too, especially for those who prefer everything to be as natural as possible.
