Step 1
Choose a pattern for your star or draw one of your own. Check quilt pattern books or children's coloring books for a an outline of a star that appeals to you.
-
Step 2
Enlarge or reduce the star pattern to get the size you prefer. You will need two different sizes. The larger-sized star will be the base and a smaller-sized star will be applied as an accent in a contrasting color. Be sure the smaller star allows plenty of room for the base color to show.
-
Step 3
Cut two identical stars from the larger pattern in the color you have chosen for a base color. Cut one smaller star in a contrasting color. A bright yellow base with a smaller red or blue star looks great, but the color choices are ultimately up to you. Choose colors that match or coordinate with your home's decor.
-
Step 4
Position the smaller star on top of one of the larger stars and fuse in place with fusible fabric. Follow the directions and heat setting suggested on the fusible fabric. Stitch the smaller star to the base with a running stitch, if preferred.
-
Step 5
Place the two larger stars together with the right sides facing out. Stitch the stars together with a contrasting embroidery floss, using a blanket stitch. Leave a small 1/2-inch opening, but do not tie off the thread at this point.
-
Step 6
Stuff the stars with a small amount of fiberfill. Use the back of a pencil to gently push fiberfill into the points of the star. Do not overfill. The goal is to create a slightly puffy star, not a tightly packed ornament. Continue to stitch it closed and tie off the embroidery floss.
-
Step 7
Attach a loop of embroidery floss to the back of the star to hang on the tree or create several and attach to a length of natural jute to display hung over doors, archways, or on the wall.
