Apply for an E-Z Pass

Currently accepted in 12 states across the East Coast, E-Z Pass is not only a money saver but also a time saver. If you spend time traveling across the toll roads or bridges in states spanning as far north as Maine to as far south as Virginia and west to Illinois, you should consider applying for an E-Z Pass.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine whether or not to apply for a personal or commercial E-Z Pass account. In general, personal E-Z accounts apply to vehicles owned or leased in the name of an individual and are limited to certain vehicle types. Personal accounts can have a maximum of four or eight E-Z Pass tags, depending on the state. Commercial accounts, on the other hand, apply to vehicles registered in a business name and can have an unlimited amount of E-Z Pass tags. Additionally, commercial vehicles are not limited to certain types as the personal accounts are.

Apply for E-Z Pass online. Most states allow you to apply for an E-Z Pass online by visiting the state’s E-Z Pass website. Maine residents, however, as of this writing do not have the option to apply online. Maine residents must download the E-Z Pass application, complete it and mail it to the Maine E-Z Pass Customer Service Center.

Call the E-Z Pass Customer Service Center for your state and apply for the transponder by phone.

    • 4

Mail or fax your E-Z Pass application. Most states that accept E-Z Pass allow their commuters to mail or fax the E-Z Pass application to the state’s E-Z Pass Customer Service Center.

    • 5

Purchase an E-Z Pass On-the-Go. Although this option is not available for all states that accept E-Z Pass, states such as New Jersey, Delaware and New York allow commuters to purchase an E-Z Pass On-the-Go from state-approved E-Z Pass retailers. If you purchase an E-Z Pass On-the-Go, you must register the device within 24 to 48 hours after using it for the first time.
