1
Socialize your dog. From the minute you bring a rat terrier home, introduce him to people and other animals. He needs to interact in order to develop healthy socialization skills. From the ages of 3 to 12 weeks, the interaction with people, animals, and other outside stimuli has a long lasting effect on the dog. It teaches him to be more confident, friendlier, and to cope with situations. However, the socializing should not stop at 4 months old. Continue to reinforce socialization skills his entire adult life.

2
Enroll your dog in obedience classes. The rat terrier's personality is domineering. Obedience classes will help cement the line of communication necessary between you and your terrier. Dogs have natural behaviors such as digging, chewing, and possibly destroying items in the home. Redirecting that behavior will teach the terrier how to behave in a home environment and also give the dog confidence and security because he understands the social hierarchy. Teaching simple commands such as "roll over," "sit" and "lick your paw" are all activities most rat terriers loves to learn because they are eager to please.

Prepare your dog for Earth Day competition. Earth Day is competition for dachshunds and small terriers sponsored through the Animal Kennel Club (AKC). On their website, look for "Club search section" to find the nearest Earth Day club for your terrier. The club will show you how to train your dog to hunt out its quarry and work underground. Even if you don't enter competitions, this is a great activity for your dog.

Check out the pet stores for toys that help keep your dog entertained. There are toys you can hide kibbles in so the dog has to work at trying to get the kibbles out, such as the Kong series of toys. Also look at chew toys such as Greenies or Nylabones. With all toys, supervision is important. Because of the terrier's inquisitive nature, supervise to see if the dog will destroy the toy or play with it.

5
Consider the time required to train and work with the rat terrier before purchasing one. They are wonderful dogs, but you will have to invest time with them. These are dogs that need training and constant stimuli. Walking your terrier for exercise and socialization, obedience classes and good imaginative toys are all important ways to make sure your rat terrier is never bored.
