-
Step 1
Find an old dark-colored coat or graduation gown. The one you choose should be long enough to reach midcalf or lower. Preferably it should be black, but dark brown or navy blue will do in a pinch. You can also sew your own robe if you've got the time.
-
Step 2
Make a hood for the Harry Potter costume. Get some red or burgundy cloth and some cloth to match the color of the robe. Cut a 1 foot by 2 foot rectangle out of each piece of fabric. Sew them together at the edges. Then fold them in half and sew one of the open edges together with the colored side turned out. Sew this to the back of the Harry Potter robe using a simple stitch.
-
Step 3
Get a white button-down shirt, a red or burgundy tie and a sweater vest. Then find some black trousers and shoes. If you do not have a white shirt and tie, Dad's will do. You can check your local thrift store for inexpensive items, as well.
-
Step 4
Look through the yard for scrap pieces of wood that have fallen or for branches that can be cut from trees. Use a smaller piece of wood for the wand and a larger one for the broom. The more crooked the pieces of wood, the better. Whittle, sand and polish the pieces of wood until they're smooth. Tie some straw to the end of the broom with string.
-
Step 5
Print out a Harry Potter insignia on your printer, or make one from yellow construction paper. If you print out the black and white version of the insignia, have the kids color it in with colored pencils. Attach the insignia to the front of the robe on the left side with a loop of tape.
-
Step 6
Get a pair of simple, black wire-rim glasses. These can also be found at thrift shops. Remove the lenses from the glasses if they are not the right prescription for the wearer.
-
Step 7
Create a simple, short hairstyle which is parted on the left and feathered in front. Draw a lightning bolt-shaped scar just above the right eye in eyebrow pencil.
