How to Become a Licensed Practical Nurse in Oklahoma

A licensed practical nurse, often called an LPN, is a type of nurse who is able to perform numerous procedures and serve in numerous functions, but with less responsibility than a registered nurse (RN). The path to becoming an LPN is usually shorter than the path to becoming an RN, and many students who wish to become RNs decide to work as LPNs first and then seek more education later.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an accredited licensed practical nursing program that leads to eligibility to take the NCLEX LPN exam.

    • 2

Take any necessary prerequisites and then apply to the program.

    • 3

Complete the LPN training program; expect to spend between 9 and 18 months on the training with classes that include clinical practice and rotations.

    • 4

Fill out an Application for Licensure by Examination through the Oklahoma Board of Nursing. You will need to include verification of your U.S. citizenship, a photograph, a criminal background check, and the fee along with the application -- and your school will need to submit a copy of your transcript.

    • 5

Register with Pearson VUE in order to obtain an authorization to test letter for the NCLEX LPN exam. Your school should provide you with the instructions.

    • 6

Wait for your authorization to test letter and then take and pass the NCLEX LPN exam. You should now be eligible to seek employment as an LPN.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are already licensed as an LPN in another state, you can submit an application for licensing by endorsement to the Oklahoma Board of Nursing.

  • Always make sure that any training program you are considering is fully accredited. A non-accredited program will mean you are not eligible to take the NCLEX exam.
