Q-tip snowflakes can be elaborate designs that are as intricate as real snow flakes.
Q-tip snowflakes can be elaborate designs that are as intricate as real snow flakes.

The first snow of the winter season is always beautiful, particularly before it becomes slushy, black and commonplace. If you live in a place where there is no snow or just cannot wait for winter to get started, try making these snowflakes with your kids as a way to kick off the winter holiday season. You can make them as elaborate or simple as you like, and your one-of-a-kind blizzard will never melt.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wax paper
  • Q-tips
  • Glue
  • Round colored sequins
  • Tape
  1. Step 1

Tape the corners of a large piece of wax paper to a table or to a piece of newsprint. It is important that the wax paper lie flat while you are doing this project.

  2. Step 2
Lay out your entire design so you can rearrange things if you don't like your finished snowflake.

Arrange your cotton swabs in a snowflake pattern. You might want to start with an asterisk shaped pattern and then build on it, or you may have another snowflake design in mind. Every snowflake is different, and no design is wrong.

  3. Step 3

Place a large drop of glue at each place where the Q-tips touch. This will hold your snowflake together.

  4. Step 4
Colored sequins, rhinestones or even smaller craft snow flakes make excellent accessories for your snowflake.

Put a colored sequin on top of each drop of glue. This will make your snowflake sparkle and shine while and cover up the "joints" of your snowflake.

  5. Step 5

Let the snowflake dry for several hours. The glue should be completely hard and set before you move the snowflake.

  6. Step 6

Peel the snowflake off of the wax paper. The glue will hold the Q-tips in place, and your creation will sparkle and shine as beautifully as new fallen snow.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you want to make smaller snowflakes you can cut the cotton swabs in half or use toothpicks in the same manner as you are instructed to use whole swabs.
