Head to Hawaii. During December, January, February, March and April, you can find humpback whales near Hawaii. You can increase your chances of seeing these mighty creatures by booking a whale watching tour near Maui, Kauai or the Big Island. Remember to keep at least 100 yards back to keep both boat and whale completely safe.

Stay close to the coast of California to watch humpback whales between April and December. This is when the whales move to their winter feeding grounds, where they gorge themselves on schools of sardines, krill and anchovies. Monterey Bay is a great place to book a whale watching tour.

Follow the humpback whales to the summer feeding grounds in Alaska. Juneau is a prime place to meet up with this migrating pod of whales. You have a lot of whale watching options in almost any Alaskan coastal city. You can book a whale watching tour aboard a cruise ship or a luxury yacht, or you can paddle out in a sea kayak--the choice is yours.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always stay back at least 100 yards from humpback whales. If the whales have babies with them, stay back even further.
