Everyone will have unique wants and needs, and you should take that into consideration. Compare and contrast the lists to see what everyone wants, and make a master list starting with the most wanted items.

Software such as anti-virus and anti-spyware should be used to protect your computer. If your children are in school, you will need a good word processing and spreadsheet program for them to use.

4. Consider hardware that you will need. Hardware can be purchased at discounted prices, just like the software. Some basics that should come with a computer today are CD and DVD-ROM drives, CD burners, built-in modems and internal storage. You can get a printer/scanner/fax combo and save some money. Additional storage units, thumb drives and external hard drives are a good idea if you have a big family.

5. Get a good warranty on your computer. There are so many different things that can go wrong at the most unexpected times. Save yourself the trouble and pick out the best warranty you can afford.

6. Pick other software that can be used on your computer. If you are interested in graphic design, money management, photo development, music players, and other fun and useful programs, you can add these as well. Be aware of the computer requirements. Most computers will meet the requirements, but it is a good idea to check.
