The Poulan Wild Thing Chain Saw is a lightweight, easy-to-start high-speed wood-cutting tool. It boasts a powerful 40cc engine and comes fully assembled with an 18” bar and automatic chain oiler. The Wild Thing Chain Saw is designed to provide years of reliable service, however the unit does require periodic adjustments in order to be properly maintained. To keep the chain saw running smoothly, the manufacturer recommends replacing the spark plug once each year.

How to Replace the Spark Plug on a Poulan Wild Thing Chain Saw

  1. Step 1

Turn the engine off. Allow it to cool completely before proceeding.

  2. Step 2

Loosen the three retaining screws on the cylinder cover, located on the top rear of the chain saw engine, by turning them counter-clockwise with the Phillips head screwdriver. Lift the cylinder cover off and set it aside.

  3. Step 3

Grasp the boot of the spark plug wire, located on the top rear of the engine. Pull the boot straight back to disconnect the spark plug wire.

  4. Step 4

Fit the spark plug wrench onto the ratchet. Set the ratchet to turn counter-clockwise.

  5. Step 5

Slide the spark-plug socket wrench over the spark plug until it is secure. Turn the ratchet counter-clockwise until the threads on the spark plug are completely free from the engine. Lift the spark plug from the engine. Discard the old spark plug.

  6. Step 6

Inspect the new spark plug. Insure the gap is set at 0.025”.

  7. Step 7

Insert the new spark plug into the spark-plug socket wrench. Set the ratchet to turn clockwise.

  8. Step 8

Align the spark plug with the threads in the engine. Turn the spark plug clockwise by hand to insure the spark plug is properly seated, then tighten with the ratchet clockwise until the spark plug is secure.

  9. Step 9

Grasp the spark plug boot. Push the spark-plug connector in the boot firmly onto the spark plug.

  10. Step 10

Replace the cylinder cover. Tighten the three retaining screws by turning them clockwise with the Phillips head screwdriver.
