Many factors can contribute to drying your hair. Chemicals found in cheap hair products are a common cause of dry hair. Other causes are skin conditions such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis or eczema. Regardless of the cause for your dry hair, to get rid of it, you’ll need to make some changes in your hair care regime.

      Treat your hair with an oil message. Oils you can use are olive, jojoba or tea tree oil. Use your fingertips to massage the oil into your scalp, and wrap your head in a warm, damp towel for about 45 minutes; proceed to wash off the oil treatment.

      Wash your hair every two days if possible to avoid depleting the oils on your scalp that moisturize your hair. Use a shampoo and conditioner formulated for dry hair. Make sure the product you use contains ingredients such as zinc, selenium sulfide, pyrithione or coal-tar.

      Cut back on your use of hair products like hairspray, styling creams, hair gels and mouse. Regular use of products like these can damage your hair. Choose products that contain botanical extracts as these are gentler on your hair and scalp.

      Towel-dry your hair instead of using a blow dryer. Additionally, avoid using curling and flat irons as much as possible, as these products burn off the natural oils that keep your hair moisturized and shiny.

      Cover your head when exposed to extreme weather conditions. Hair professionals recommend moisturizing your hair and scalp if you plan to be outside in harsh weather conditions for an extended period.

      Get rid of dry hair by using a humidifier. If you’re out of your house all day, turn on the humidifier before going to bed. It’ll add some moisture to the air and relieve your scalp from dryness.

      Check your thyroid if your hair condition does not improve after taking all the necessary precautions. Dry hair and skin are also symptoms of thyroid disorders.
