Step 1
Look at the general appearance of the Smooth Fox Terrier. Males are 15 ½ inches at the withers, and females are a bit shorter. The length of the breed, as measured from the backside of the withers to the outer portion of the rump, should not be more than 12 inches long. The head should be between 7 and 7 ¼ inches long. Males weigh 18 lbs. and females may weigh a pound or two less.

Step 2
Look at the dark eyes and rims--they are rather small and set somewhat deep into the skull. They should give the Smooth Fox Terrier an intelligent, firey expression. They are almost perfectly round. The v-shaped ears are small and somewhat thick. They drop forward near the cheek and do not hang on the side of the head. The jaws are muscular and the black nose is fully pigmented.

Step 3
Make sure the muscular neck is not throaty and has a rather decent length. It gets wider as it approaches the shoulders. The deep chest is not broad. The long shoulders are well angulated, leading to strong-boned legs. The feet are compact and round with hard pads. The muscular hindquarters have long thighs and stifles that are curved, but not turned in or out. The rear feet are also compact and round with hard pads. The tail is high on the rump and carried up, but not over the back and not curled. The last quarter of the tail is docked.

Step 4
Pet the smooth coat. It is flat, hard and dense. White is the preferred color, but the Smooth Fox Terrier may be brindle. There should be no red or liver markings.
