How to Create a Spelling Game Using a Shower Curtain
Every Monday in elementary schools students are provided with a list of spelling words they need to master by the end of the week. Spelling rules are taught and a small amount of time is normally spent practicing the spelling words each day in class. Many of the activities for practicing spelling words are repetitious and boring. Here is a kinesthetic activity for practicing spelling words your students will surely enjoy.

1
Purchase a vinyl shower curtain liner. Any light color will work, like white, cream, yellow or light blue. Consider investing in a heavier weight shower curtain to ensure it lasts longer.
-
2
Write each letter of the alphabet on the shower curtain using a black permanent marker. Shower curtain liners are approximately 70-inches long by 71-inches wide. There are 26 letters in the alphabet, so it is best to have 6 rows of letters (5 letters in each row for the first 5 rows and 1 letter in the last row). Each letter can be approximately 8 inches in height and it is best to leave about 7 inches in between each row of letters. Since the objective is to spell words during this game, not hunt for letters, write the letters on the shower curtain in alphabetical order.

-
3
Place rolled tape in different spots on the back of the shower curtain and secure to the floor before using it.
-
4
Have children who are playing take their shoes off and sit down on each side of the shower curtain.
-
5
Choose a child from one side and have him stand at the top of the shower curtain. Give him a spelling word. The children who are sitting should be spelling the word in their heads. Have the child repeat the word and step on the letters required to spell it, while spelling the word aloud. If the child spells the word correctly, praise him and have him go to the back of the line to wait for another turn. If the child spells the word incorrectly, the child must return to his desk.
-
6
Continue playing until one child remains and is named "Shower Spelling Star."

Tips & Warnings
To make this Shower Spelling game a little more fun and authentic, give each child a bathrobe to put on over their clothes while they are spelling their word. "Shower Spelling Star" could be written on the back of the bath robe.
Students sitting along side of the shower curtain can spell the word in their heads and write it down on a piece of paper and self check.
