How much is that Maltese in the window? If you are looking in a pet store window, then the cost is probably too high for you and the cost is high for future Maltese dogs as well. You can rescue a Maltese from an animal shelter to save yourself some money and to save a life.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide if you are ready for a dog. Do you have the time to walk it, clean up after it and play with it? Are you ready for a long commitment? Ask yourself these questions before rescuing a dog.

  2. Step 2

Look at dog breeds before deciding on one. Make sure a Maltese is the right match for you. Petfinder.com has a great dog matching questionnaire to help you decide.

  3. Step 3

Decide what sex and breed of Maltese you want. Perhaps you want a trained, older Maltese so you don't have to potty train. Maybe you want a female Maltese for the temperment. You can search for Malteses to rescue from Petfinder.com and you can narrow down your search to the age and gender you prefer.

  4. Step 4

Find your Maltese match. A list of Maltese and Maltese mix dogs will appear on Petfinder.com for you to choose the one most suitable for you.

  5. Step 5

Fill out the paperwork. After you have selected your Maltese, there is a series of applications you will have to complete. The process varies from animal shelter to animal shelter. In most cases, you will have to prove your home is ready for a dog by bringing family members to the shelter and opening your home for a visit.

  6. Step 6

Be patient. The adoption process can sometimes take a while. Maltese dogs are being rescued more and more but this also means the dog you have chosen could be in high demand. The best dogs come to those who wait for that perfect match.
