How to Play the Raga Gambhiranata Scale on the Guitar

The Raga Gambhiranata scale is based on Indian classical music. It consists of a unique step pattern of a major third followed by a half step, whole step, another major third, and a final half step. It contains five notes, which makes this a pentatonic scale.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Begin by playing the third fret of the sixth string (low E string) with your middle finger. This is the root note of the scale.

  2. Step 2

    Continue by playing the second fret of the fifth string (A string) with your forefinger. This is the note B, the second degree of the Raga Gambhiranata scale.

  3. Step 3

    Play the third fret of the fifth string with your middle finger. This is the note C, the third degree of the Raga Gambhiranata scale.

  4. Step 4

    Place your pinky on the fifth fret of the fifth string. This is the note D, the fourth degree of the Raga Gambhiranata scale.

  5. Step 5

    Play the fourth fret of the fourth string (D string) with your ring finger. This is the note F sharp, the fifth degree of the Raga Gambhiranata scale.

  6. Step 6

    Play the fifth fret of the fourth string with your pinky. This is the final note of the scale.

  7. Step 7

    Complete this scale by playing steps 6 through 1 in reverse order. You can now play the Raga Gambhiranata scale on the guitar.

Tips & Warnings
  • Play this scale in different positions all along the guitar fretboard. It is a great exercise that will make you a much better player.
