1
Choose a pattern or an object that you would like on the watering can luminary. Some ideas would be stars, insects, flowers or just a pattern of polka dots. Trace the pattern onto tracing paper and cut out the pattern, leaving approximately a 1/2 inch on all sides.
-
2
Using masking tape, attach the pattern or object in the desired spot on the watering can.
-
-
3
Use a nail to mark the design onto the watering can. Do this by pressing the nail along the lines of the pattern, making dots in the shape of the pattern. Remove the pattern from the watering can.
-
4
Fill the watering can with water and freeze it completely. If your watering can leaks, place a plastic bag inside the watering can and then fill the bag up with water.
-
5
When the water is completely frozen in the watering can, lay it on a stable surface so that it doesn't roll around. Punch holes in the watering can on the pattern by placing the nail over the indentations and gently tapping the nail with a hammer. The nail should go completely through the watering can, making a hole. Repeat this step on all of the indentations that were made previously.
-
6
Rinse the watering can with warm water to get rid of the ice inside and dry the watering can completely. If you choose, you can spray paint the watering can a different color.
-
7
After the watering can has dried, place a candle inside the watering can and you now have a watering can luminary for your garden. A good idea would be to use a citronella candle in the luminary to keep bugs away at night.

Tips & Warnings
Make a couple different watering can luminaries in all different sizes and add them to your porch so you can have light outside at night in a decorative way.
Place your watering can on a towel if it wants to roll around when you are punching holes in it. The towel will help prevent it from rolling off the surface.
Be careful when using the nail and hammer to make holes in the watering can. Make sure that you don't hit your hand with the hammer or drive the nail into your other hand.
