Making gravy for hamburgers can reform the lowly hamburger to a gourmet meal. Ingredients for gravy are common and found in most kitchens and the gravy can be whipped up in a matter of minutes. By experimenting with different seasonings and add-ins, the gravy can be as exciting as you choose. If you’ve already pan-fried your burgers, making the gravy is a snap.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Skillet
  • Water
  • Flour
  • Small jar with tight fitting lid
  • Wooden spoon
  1. Step 1

Pan fry the hamburger patties over medium high heat until seared on both sides. Turn down the heat to medium and let them cook until well done. Remove the patties from the skillet and keep them warm.

  2. Step 2

Make a simple roux for the gravy by combining 1/2 cup water with 3 tablespoons of flour in a small jar. Secure the lid on the jar and shake until it is blended and without lumps. Pour this mixture into the hot skillet. Stir the mixture around it the pan to release any brown bits the hamburger has left behind.

  3. Step 3

Add up to 1 cup of water to the skillet and stir. Bring the pan to a boil, stirring constantly. Continue to cook until the gravy is thick and bubbling.

  4. Step 4

Season the gravy with salt, pepper and any desired seasonings to taste. Serve it over the hot patties.

Tips & Warnings
  • Simple add-ins for the gravy include sliced mushrooms and onions.
  • A quarter cup of cheddar cheese can be melted into the gravy as it cooks.
  • Milk can be substituted for the water for a milk gravy taste similar to that of sausage gravy.
  • Bacon grease or other oil can be used if the hamburger patties were cooked by a different method. Use 1 tablespoon oil or the grease from several slices of cooked bacon.
