How to Use a Diffuser to Style Your Hair

A diffuser is a great tool for a blow dryer, and is useful for a variety of hair types, including curly, permed and colored hair. Diffusers are also great for preventing further damage to hair, since you are getting the heat from the dryer to dry the hair without the strong force of a regular blow dryer. Diffusers can make drying time take a little longer, but are completely worth the extra effort. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Set your blow dryer at the lowest speed and make sure the diffuser is securely attached. Make sure you have any other hair care tools that you wish to use close to you. This may include a brush, comb or styling gel. If possible, dry your hair in front of a mirror to help you see what you're doing. This will allow you to style as you go.

Start drying the hair at the roots first. Try to maintain the same direction with the blow dryer and blow dry in a circle. Keep the blow dryer at a 90-degree angle, if possible. Work your way out to the ends of your hair.

    • 3

Hang your head upside down while you blow dry for extra volume and bounce. Again aim the blow dryer at the roots first and work your way out. Brushing while drying in this position is good for straight hair.

    • 4

Add any hair care products while the hair is still slightly damp. Use gels and mousse sparingly to prevent the crunchy look--unless that's what you're going for.

    • 5

Press the cool button once you are finished. The cool button is usually located directly under the barrel of the blow dryer. The change to cool air helps to set the hair and also seals it to give added protection throughout the day.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try twisting your hair around your finger in small sections--about 1 inch of hair--while using the blow dryer and diffuser. Repeat the steps on all hair you wish to curl. This creates a pretty spiral curl and also can reduce the extra heat needed from a curling iron.

  • If purchasing your hair dryer and diffuser separately, make sure you are buying a diffuser that will fit the end of your blow dryer's barrel.

  • Diffusers are great for flattening hair, too: brush your hair flat as you dry. Hair products are available to help smooth the hair for a sleek look.

  • Keep blow dryers away from water sources to reduce the risk of electric shock.

  • Keep blow dryers away from small children.
