How to Add Run to Windows Vista Start Menu

Users of Microsoft's Windows operating system were surprised when Microsoft released Vista and removed the Run command from the Start menu. Microsoft didn’t completely remove it from Windows, they just hid it from view. Trying to improve usability, Microsoft added the Search function to the menu, but if you are familiar with the Run command and miss using it, don’t despair. You can restore the Run command to the Microsoft Windows Vista Start menu.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Microsoft Vista and right-click the Start button on your desktop. Go to "Properties".

    • 2

Click "Properties", then "Customize" when the Properties window opens. On the Customize Start Menu window, scroll down to the "Run" command. Click the check box next to "Run".

    • 3

Click OK to close the Customize Start Menu window.

    • 4

Click OK to close the Start menu window and get back to your desktop. The Run command is now part of your Microsoft Vista Start menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to use the Run command for your current session only and not permanently, press the Windows key and the letter R (Windows + R) on your keyboard together to bring up the Run command. Run will disappear when you close the session.

  • The Search function in Microsoft Vista has the same function as the Run command, except that it does more. The search command will search and index all files on your Vista computer.
