Alabama residents are faced with animal rescue shelters that have a disproportionate amount of pit bulls. Unfortunately, pit bulls are abandoned because they have earned an unwarranted bad reputation. As a result, the rescue centers have plenty of pit bulls in need of rescue.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn about the breed. Before you bring a rescued pit bull into your home, make sure you're educated about the breed. The more you know and understand the breed the better you will be able to bond with your new dog. Because the breed is so misunderstood, many people get pit bulls without knowing how to train them and become frustrated. Knowledge about the breed reduces the likelihood of returning the dog to the rescue center.

  2. Step 2

Evaluate your living arrangements. If you live in an apartment, you should check with your landlord before rescuing a pit bull. Some landlords don't have a problem with tenants having dogs, but they might have a problem with particular breeds. If you're an Alabama homeowner, check with your homeowner's insurance policy to see if it contains a clause about dog breeds. Some insurance companies charge a surcharge for what they consider “high-risk” dog breeds.

  3. Step 3

Choose the right pit bull. The best type of pit bull to rescue is one that fits in with your family's dynamics. Choosing a high-energy pit bull requires a high-energy owner. If you are laid back and your idea of exercise is reaching for the remote control, then it is best to get a low-key pit bull that doesn't require a lot of activity.

  4. Step 4

Contact an Alabama animal rescue center. Reputable centers such Turtle Moon Rescue located in Lineville Alabama have several rescued Pit Bulls looking for new homes.

  5. Step 5

Take your new dog to your own veterinarian. Even though most animal rescue centers provide veterinary care; you should double check and confirm the clean bill of health given at the animal rescue center. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use patience when introducing your new pit bull to your household. Some rescued pit bulls have to unlearn bad habits in order to learn the new more desirable habits to fit into the new environment.
