The black cat is one of the biggest Halloween symbols this side of the pumpkin. It is supposed to be bad luck to cross paths with a black cat, but of course that is just superstition. Black cats are no different than any other colored cat. To remind kids that black cats are fun and not really scary, create a black cat puppet. They can use the black cat puppet to talk about how the black cat must feel on Halloween.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Black sock
  • 2 green cotton balls
  • White pipe cleaners
  • Black pipe cleaners
  • Black button
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Red felt
  1. Step 1

Find an old black sock no longer in use.

  2. Step 2

Dye two cotton balls green. Use food coloring to dye the cotton balls green and then set them out to dry. Use a hot glue gun to attach the green balls as the black cat's eyes. This should be done toward the top of the sock.

  3. Step 3

Hot glue a button under the eyes where the cat's nose should go. Leave a little room for the whiskers, which you are going to attach next.

  4. Step 4

Cut your pipe cleaners to go on the sock as whiskers. They should hang over the sock a bit, but not be so long that they are too heavy to stay in place. Use your hot glue gun to attach three white pipe cleaners on each side of the nose.

  5. Step 5

Cut a little tongue out of some red felt and glue it under the nose.

  6. Step 6

Take a black pipe cleaner and bend it in the middle to form an L shape. Glue the long end to the back of the sock so that the other part sticks out like a tail. You can then curve the tail upwards if you like.

  7. Step 7

Take one more black pipe cleaner and cut it in half. Bend each half to form a triangle without the bottom. Glue both on the top of the sock above the eyes to form the cat's ears.

  8. Step 8

Wait for the glue to dry and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can sew the button on as the nose instead of using the hot glue gun if you prefer.
  • Hot glue guns can cause serious burns. Younger children should not use them.
