Dress Like Greta Garbo

Glamorous Greta Garbo was one of the most self-confident starlets of her time. The 1930s actress was a beauty with a distinctive gaze and an inward sexuality. Her haunting eyes emanated depth and mystery. Hailing from Sweden, the slender Nordic beauty was famous for her sculpted facial features and determined lips. Rather than embracing the limelight, she was famous for shunning publicity. Her solitary demands only exemplified her mystique. She received accolades for both her talent and beauty. In 1954, she received an Honorary Oscar. In 1950, she was considered "The Most Beautiful Woman in the World" by the Guinness Book of World Records. In 1999, she was ranked the "Fifth Greatest Female Star of All Time," according to the American Film Institute. As for fashion, Garbo's beauty and accessories were what women emulated.

  • Cloche hats
  • Wide brim hat
  • Beret
  • Pearls
  • Long pearl necklace
  • Gold ring
  • Scarf
  • Tailored button-down shirt
  • Silk tie
  • Wide-leg pajama pants
  • Trench coat

  1. Step 1

Add some vintage-inspired hats to your wardrobe. Garbo constantly wore cloche hats, wide brim hats, and berets. Find these hats at a vintage shop, thrift store, or even at an online auction.

  2. Step 2

Get some pearls. Garbo adorned herself with a long pearl necklace in the public eye. However, in private she preferred wearing very little jewelry, except for a single gold ring.

  3. Step 3

Garbo often wore scarves. After all, one of her most memorable roles was playing the exotic femme fatale "Mata Hari" who tantalizingly draped herself in scarves. The character danced to entertain, eventually shedding most or all of her silk scarves.

  4. Step 4

Garbo's personal style consisted of men's clothes. This included tailored shirts, silk ties and pajama pants. She was also pictured wearing trench coats with thin belts at the waist.

  5. Step 5

In private, she preferred comfortable shoes. Her shoe collection included men's oxfords, sneakers and flat dancer's slippers.
