Sometimes you have an "oops" moment with your hair color, and want to remove it quickly. Or perhaps you're tired of the buildup of color on your hair and want to return to your natural color. For whatever reason, your goal should be to remove hair color without damaging the hair shaft.
Washing your hair with dish soap in the hottest water you can stand. Hot water opens the hair cuticle, and the dish soap strips the color from the hair. However, it is drying, so condition well after each wash.

Use a dandruff shampoo in very hot water to remove the color from your hair. Lather up in the shower, and leave the dandruff shampoo on for at least 30 minutes. Rinse and condition well to make up for the drying effects of the shampoo.

Head to the drugstore to buy a color-removing product. Color Oops (see Resources) works well and doesn't damage the hair. Follow the box instructions and apply to the hair in an open area, as it may have an odor. Rinse from your hair. Repeat as many times as necessary.

Go to a professional hairstylist to have her bleach your hair to make it lighter, or dye it darker to fix the hair color. A professional can give you tips on how to stay closer to your natural hair color when dyeing it, so you don't have another hair color disaster.
