How to Dress Like a Hobo for Halloween

It’s down to the last minute and you have no idea what to wear for a Halloween costume. If you have an old pair of jeans or overalls, an old T-shirt, an old blazer or flannel shirt, a hat, some ribbon and a stick, you can dress up like a hobo for Halloween. The hobo look is cute, easy and affordable. With a few simple steps, you can become the best hobo at your Halloween party.

Things You'll Need

• Raggedy pair of pants or overalls
• Old T-shirt
• Old blazer, jacket or flannel shirt
• Tie
• Old, worn shoes
• Hat with ribbon and feather or flower
• Cigar
• Stick with bandanna tied at the end
• Pillowcase

Instructions

1. Wear a raggedy pair of pants or overalls. Add a patch to one of the ripped parts of your pants to add to the hobo look.

2. Wear a dirty and stained shirt. The dirtier the shirt, the better. Choose a plain white T-shirt, a plain colored T-shirt, or a striped T-shirt.

3. Wear an old blazer, jacket or flannel shirt. To add to the hobo effect, find a blazer, jacket or flannel shirt that is dirty with holes in it. Wear the blazer over the T-shirt. You can add a loose tie around the neck to add to the look if you’d like.

4. Wear a pair of old and worn shoes. Find a pair of shoes that are fairly worn. Add to the look by choosing a pair with holes in them. Remember, the dirtier the better.

5. Wear a hat with a dark ribbon tied around it. You can also wear a beanie. Avoid baseball hats, as they do not contribute to the hobo look as much. Tie or glue a ribbon around the base of the hat and stick a feather or flower in between the ribbon and the hat.

6. Gather your accessories together. Purchase a chocolate cigar from your local candy shop and carry it around in your mouth. Grab a plain stick and tie a bandanna to the end of it. Walk around holding it as part of your costume. Use a plain pillow case to carry your Halloween candy in.

Tips & Warnings

• Don’t shave for a few days if you are a guy. The stubble on your face will complete the hobo look. If you are a girl, you can either smear dirt or smudged eyeliner on your face. You want to appear to have a dirty unkempt face.

• You can find most of the pieces for your costume at home. If you find you don’t have some of the clothes, visit your local thrift shop or garage sale.

• If you are dressed in dark, be sure to watch the roads at nighttime. It is more difficult for drivers to see you in the dark if you are dressed in dark clothing.
