How to Hire a Ghost Writer

With the advent of the Internet, freelance writing has largely moved online. This has made it easier to find ghost writers than ever before. Ghost writers are in so much demand that they generally make themselves easy to find for potential clients. It's only necessary to know where to look.

Instructions

    • 1

Define the scope of your writing project. You should know about how long the wok will be, including an approximate page count as well as an approximate word count. If you are unsure about a word count, decide on the font style and size you will require and do a word count to find out how many words are on one page. Multiply this by the number of pages you estimate you will need for the work. Some ghost writers charge by the word, others by the page, but all will need to have a good grasp of the scope of the project before accepting it.

    • 2

Think about what skills and experience you want the ghost writer to have. If you are working on a print book, you may want someone who has already written or ghost written a published book. If the work is a shorter work or an ebook you might only require good writing skills. If your topic is very technical or involved, you might also want to hire a ghost writer with a degree or work experience in the subject matter.

    • 3

Come up with a realistic budget for the project. The budget will largely define what kind of choice you will have in ghost writers. A more experienced, successful ghost writer will change more than a newer one. It may seem like a newer one is a bargain, but often the success of the work depends on the expertise of the writer, so plan accordingly.

    • 4

Look through sites that have freelance portfolios. Many active ghost writers have resumes and portfolios online on sites like Freelance Portfolios. Sites like this have a wide range of portfolios available that allow the client to choose the skill and experience level of their choice. You can also try posting an ad on Craigslist with your requirements and an overview of the project. If you want more ghost writers to choose from, try posting a project on Elance or RentACoder and allowing people to bid on the project (see Resources below).

    • 5

Draw up a contract that specifies the cost of the project, the method of payment, who gets the rights and recognition for the work. You and the ghost writer will need to sign the contract before work begins. The contract can be signed online with an electronic signature by signing and then scanning the document, or you can fax a signed copy to the ghost writer and have them sign and fax a copy back to you.
