Step 1
Head to the beach. Enjoy one last sea or lakeside hurrah before the autumn weather starts to set in. Bring shovels and pails and build sand castles with your kids, splash around in the water and soak in some late summer sun for a little color that will carry you into the fall.
-
Step 2
Light a fire. Barbecues and Labor Day go hand in hand. You don't have to spend a ton of money, either. Hot dogs and burgers or chicken legs on the grill are always popular choices. Roast corn on the cob and slice fresh watermelon, then kick back and enjoy the day and the people around you. Play some backyard kickball or toss a baseball around.
-
Step 3
Take in a parade. Check out your local paper for parades in your town, or head to a town nearby and make a day trip out of it. Get into it by waving a flag or dressing your entire family in silly hats. Bring sandwiches and cold drinks and don't forget your camera.
-
Step 4
Spend a day in the park. With high gas prices you might be limited to how far you can go. Pack a picnic lunch and an ice chest full of cold beverages and head to a local park. Invite some friends and family members to make a day of it. Bring water balloons for a fun way to keep cool, toss a frisbee around or have some fun competitions like three-legged races and watermelon seed spitting.
