1
Determine whether or not you want to let the family members and friends at the table know about your plan. You may want to keep the event a surprise to everybody or you may want to tell just certain members of the family such as your parents. The problem with letting others know your plan is that they may spoil the surprise by acting “differently” during Thanksgiving dinner.

2
Hide the ring in a way that your girlfriend and anybody else at the table won't see it. Putting it in your pocket is only a good idea if you have deep enough pockets so that it won't fall out. You could consider taping it underneath the table. You want the ring to be easily accessible so that when the time comes you're not searching for it.

3
Wait for the right time to pull the ring out. Proposing during the middle of Thanksgiving dinner when everybody is eating isn't a very good idea since people won't be paying attention. Perhaps you could do it just as everybody has finished or while dessert is being passed around the table. You'll want to be sure to choose a time when everybody is still seated at the table. This way, nobody will miss the proposal.

4
Get everybody's attention before you pull the ring out. You could simply tap your glass with a fork or stand and announce that there is something you would like to do. All eyes should be on you and your soon to be fiancée when you drop to one knee.

5
Plan to say something special. Remember that you'll be indirectly speaking to more than just your girlfriend. A simple “Will you marry me” is nice but since you're proposing at Thanksgiving dinner, the event should be made a little more special. Talk for 30 seconds to a minute about how much your girlfriend means to you before you open the box and show her the ring. You want everybody to know your true feelings.
