If you are an avid pug lover, you want to make sure the breed is preserved and every pug is taken care of humanely. There are situations that may arise where owners can no longer care for their pets, or they may not be taking care of them properly. In these cases, a pug may need to be rescued. There are thousands of pugs out there that are in need of safe homes. By utilizing free resources and connecting with other animal services, you can start your own pug rescue for less.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Digital camera
  • Dog kennel
  • Dog food
  • Dog collar and leash
  • Dog dishes
  1. Step 1

Set up a home office where you will be able to make phone calls and set up pet adoptions. Have a computer with Internet access available and also a file system where you can keep track of the pugs. Take pictures of all pugs who need to be adopted. Set up a free website such as geocities or freewebs and design a website that is capable of holding pictures. You can post pictures of pugs in need of homes on this site as well as keep track of the foster care and adoption process (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Run a free add in a local newspaper classified section and find out if there are volunteers who are willing to donate their time and money into fostering a pug. Set up a pug foster adoption application, make sure to have the perspective foster parents include at least 3 personal references as well as veterinary references. Ask them questions that will assure they have the means to take care of a pug, such as are they employed, do they have time to devote to caring for a pug or an ill pug, can they afford veterinary expenses and do they have a fenced in backyard. The foster parents will take care of the pug until a home is found; this could take several months. Be sure to keep the lines of communication open with the foster parents at all times.

  3. Step 3

Find pugs in your area that are in need of homes. Contact local animal shelters and run an add on a free classifieds site to find pugs that are abandoned or abused or if their owners can no longer take care of them. Tell them it is free to drop off the pug to your rescue no matter how bad the condition of the pug is in. Leave your contact information for them to get in touch with you if needed.

  4. Step 4

Question adoptive parents about their capabilities with pugs. Ask some tough questions such as why they want a pug, why they want a pug with special needs, why they may want an older pug and do they have the financial means to take care of a pug. You want to be assured that this will be this pug's long-term home. You may want to charge a nominal fee for the adoption of the pug, a good way to determine that is by evaluating what the pug has cost you to take care of him up until this point.

  5. Step 5

Update your website accordingly as pugs come in and as they are adopted out. Keep accurate files on all pugs, their health records and who their new owners are. Keep track of all funds by means of an accountant or financial adviser.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask local veterinary clinics if they would be willing to donate their services for your pug rescue.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for donations such as food, dog toys, dog beds and kennels.
  • Ask friends, family and other pug lovers if they would be willing to foster a pug.
  • Have each pug that arrives to your rescue receive a thorough health checkup as well as immunization shots.
  • Make sure the pug will be getting neutered or spayed before finding their new home.
  • You may want to charge a pug adoption fee for new owners; if you do this, you need to claim this as income. Contact a financial adviser in your area for specific legalities and regulations.
  • Host a pug adoption picnic where foster families and adoptive families can get together and raise money for your rescue.
  • Host a pug charity event to raise money for your pug rescue.
  • Make sure before you start running ads for pug fostering that you have the means to properly take care of the pugs that come in. Have a backup system in place of foster parents and helpers.
  • Make sure you have the financial means to care for a sick or handicapped pug.
  • Be prepared for emergency health situations.
