Dazzle your friends with your amazing abilities to predict the future. Okay, so maybe these origami fortune tellers can’t really tell what is in store, but they are good for a few laughs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • One sheet of construction or typing paper
  • Pair of scissors
  • Pen or pencil
  1. Step 1

Fold one corner of the paper down until it meets the adjacent side. With a scissors, carefully cut off the rectangular piece of edge that peeks out from beneath the fold. You will now have a triangle. Unfold it and you will have a perfect square.

  2. Step 2

Fold over the two opposite corners and crease. Unfold it and you will have a square with the creases creating an “X” on it.

  3. Step 3

Fold all corners into the center so that you have a smaller square. Turn the paper over so the folded sides are on the bottom.

  4. Step 4

Once again, fold all four corners in toward the center. You should have an even smaller square now.

  5. Step 5

    Step 5

Fold the square in half and make a crease. Undo the last fold so you have a square again. Then fold in half the other way and make a crease. You should now have a rectangle with two square flaps over it.

  6. Step 6

Push the four corners in to meet at the top. You should have a four-sided diamond shape. Pull out the bottom flaps. Stick each of your thumbs and forefingers underneath the flaps. To operate your fortune teller, open it one way by pulling your thumbs away from your forefingers, then allowing them to come back together. Then pull your right side fingers and left side fingers away from each other, and put them back together. Repeat the movements, alternating each way.

  7. Step 7

Open the inside flaps of your fortune teller and write short and simple “fortunes” underneath each side of the triangular flap. You will need eight fortunes, such as, “Tomorrow will be your lucky day,” “You will find money when you least expect it,” or “Beware of strangers in hats on Thursday.”

  8. Step 8

Put all the flaps back down. On the inside of the fortune teller, write the numbers 1 through 8, one on each point. On the outside of each diamond, write the name of a color.

  9. Step 9

Now you are ready to tell your friend’s fortune. Hold the fortune teller in a closed position. Ask a friend to choose a color. Spell out the name of the color your friend chooses, opening it one way, then the other for each letter. Ask your friend to choose one of the numbers inside. Open the flap of that number and read the fortune inside.
